Water Optimization & Efficiency

COST: FREE
Earn .1 CEU

Join the water experts from Black & Veatch for this fast-paced look at ways you can maximize the value of your water system and enhance the service you deliver to customers. In this free series of webcasts, specialists from Black & Veatch’s Water and Management Consulting groups will explore each of these four topics: Energy – Labor – Debt – & Capital Improvements in enough detail to allow you to find savings that your utility could recapture.

Energy costs associated with the delivery, treatment and distribution of water and handling of wastewater are a major expense for water suppliers and are rising faster than other operating costs. Energy costs can account for between a third and a half of a municipality's water budget, second only to costs for labor. The first free webcast in the series addresses Energy, and will be held on Wednesday, November 9th at 2:30 EST.

Water management and municipal government executives who attend will hear about:

  • Current Trends in Utility Optimization including 4 areas for potential improvement
  • Energy Management and how Black & Veatch has helped water systems dramatically reduce energy use
  • Achieving Energy Efficiencies with Performance Contracting, applying a relatively new delivery model to implement energy saving projects.
There will be time for your questions at the end, and you’ll be done in an hour. The session will be moderated by Mike Vann, former GM of Birmingham Water works and will feature presentations by:

Achieving ‘Smart Water’ through Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI): How the latest AMI developments can further improve operational efficiencies

COST: FREE

As focus on water conservation and compliance with increasing State and Federal regulations continues to grow, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) — the smart technology that is typically associated with improving efficiency and conservation for electric utilities — continues to gain attention from utilities and city managers as an efficient way to improve water resource management.

In fact, the Village of Frankfort in Frankfort, NY, was recently recognized by the New York State Conference of Mayors and Municipal Officials for its AMI and smart meter implementation, which was part of its Public Water/Energy Efficiency Project aimed at increasing operational efficiency by improving:

  • Water and energy conservation
  • Customer service
  • System accuracy and demand response
  • And, reducing costs associated with manual readings and significantly reducing or eliminating unlawful water/energy consumption
Don’t miss, “Achieving ‘Smart Water’ through Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI): How the latest AMI developments can further improve operational efficiencies,” an educational webinar in which AMI experts from Mueller Systems will discuss some of the latest technological developments that can help your utility to optimize its AMI system to achieve an even greater level of increased operational efficiency.

Designing for Permanence Material Choices for Real Sustainability

There seems to be a lot of confusion about what constitutes a “green” product. For those who specify products for new installations, what materials most accurately represent the attributes of a truly sustainable product and what system do you use to evaluate those materials?

Representatives of the National Clay Pipe Institute will discuss the key aspects of a sustainable material and the many of the concerns that must, by definition, be included in any programs that include sustainability as a goal. Whether you call it Asset Management, Sustainability or Environmentally Preferable Purchasing, the material choices you make are critical for the long-term health (financial and environmental) of your community. Hear from Terry Martin of Seattle, one of the leaders in formal Asset Management practices in the U.S. about his experience.

Our presenters:

  • Mike Van Dine, PE, President, National Clay Pipe Institute
  • Joe Parker, MBA, MPM, PMP, Vice President of Technical Services, Southern California, National Clay Pipe Institute
  • Terry Martin, PE, Acting Director Asset Management & Economics Services, Seattle Public Utilities

Recipe for the Successful Measurement of I/I Reduction

COST: FREE

Originally aired on Feb. 23, this webinar is back due to popular demand! Be sure to register today!

Many sewer rehabilitation projects are completed without any ‘before and after’ analyses to determine if their work was effective. Once they get to the end, people often regret that they didn’t get the appropriate information from before they performed the work to analyze the impact of the work. Most collection system managers who perform rehabilitation work on sewers will eventually be asked by their manager, or an elected official, ‘What have you accomplished with the thousands/millions of dollars we have spent’?

It has been said that the best way to learn to do a thing is to ask someone who has done it what they would do differently next time. This seminar will help you learn from the experience of others. It will address the key factors of a rehabilitation project that must be included to allow managers to adequately determine the impact of their project. This seminar will not discuss the products and methods for the actual rehabilitation work.
